Understanding Couple's Counseling and Insurance Coverage

Insights from Susan Ellis LPC in Germantown, Wisconsin

Couple's counseling can be an effective way for couples to work through their relationship issues and improve communication. However, unlike individual therapy, couple's counseling is not always covered by insurance. This is because insurance companies typically cover medical diagnoses and treatments for individual patients rather than relationships.

Hello, I am Susan Ellis LPC, a licensed therapist based in Germantown, Wisconsin. I work with couples who hope to improve their relationships. In these sessions, the relationship is the core of the session in couple's counseling. Therefore, the focus is not on treating a medical diagnosis for one individual, but rather on improving the relationship between two people. This is why insurance companies may not cover couple's counseling.

When I have an intake session for couple's counseling I want to schedule as much time as possible. These intakes can last up to 2 hours, during which I will get to know the couple and their specific needs. Therapy sessions typically last 60-75 minutes and are focused on identifying and addressing the couple's specific issues.

While insurance may not cover couple's counseling, the investment in the relationship can have long-term benefits, potentially saving the couple from more costly and emotionally taxing challenges down the road.

Working with a licensed therapist like myself can provide valuable insights and strategies to help couples work through their issues and build a stronger, healthier relationship.
